April is a busy month in the gardeners year,
sowing of vegetables really gets under way.
|
| |
|
Start sowing early Carrots, sow very thinly
½ in deep and allow 12 ins between rows,
cover with fleece when they appear to avoid
the dreaded carrot fly. |
|
Brussels sprouts, cabbages, can be sown
into a seed bed ½ in deep towards the end
of the month, alternatively sow 2 seeds
into a 2 ½ in pot and grow undercover thinning
to one seedling allowing the strongest to
grow on transplant in May. Cauliflower's,
calabrese Can be sown in a seed bed the
same as Brussels sprouts, but I find that
they do better sown in pots in a cold frame
or greenhouse, they make better plants and
are not checked when planted out.

|
With Aubergines, indoor cucumbers, outdoor
tomatoes, and capsicums both sweet/chilli,
sowing two seeds in small pots, ½ in deep,
and put into a heated propagator, or an
airing cupboard will do, ( if you have an
understanding Wife ) but keep checking them
daily as you will be surprised at how quick
they can germinate. |
|
|
Beetroot can be sown direct into the ground,
sow bolt-resistant varieties, about the
middle of the month in rows 1in deep and
12in apart, sow very thinly to avoid having
to thin.
There is still time to sow spring varieties
of Broad Bean, sow in double rows 8 in apart
with 24 ins between the double rows, sow
a few extra seeds at the end of each row
to fill in any gaps. |
|
|
Sow Radishes round the edge of seed beds
in small quantities to prevent the temptation
to sow to many, sow them ½ in deep 12ins
apart. Start making regular sowings of spinach
thinly, 1in deep 12ins between rows.
Self- blanching celery and celeriac, can
be sown in pans or pots in a heated propagator.
Leeks, sow them in a seed bed ½ in deep
in short rows 8ins apart with plenty of
room to develop, if like me you plant your
leeks where the early potatoes were grown.

|
Peas, sow from now to early June for succession,
I make a drill by using a spade, so that
the drill is 6ins wide 2ins deep, put the
seeds in 3 rows, staggered spacing the seeds
2ins apart, if sowing more than one row
space them apart the height the peas will
grow.

|
|
|
Sow an early variety of turnips ½ in deep
and 12in apart.
Tomatoes
Brussels Sprouts
Cauliflower
Kale
Leeks
